Urban Sustainability in Nigeria Series

DIN published in June 2005, the first issue in the occasional paper series on urban sustainability in Nigeria. Authored by Mr. Bolaji Uthman, Head, Press and Public Affairs, Lagos State Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget, it examines the challenges, which Lagos, Nigeria’s first mega-city is faced with. By presenting best practices in policy design and project implementation, Mr. Uthman recommends new approaches to improving the standard of living of all urban citizens in Nigeria not just those in Lagos.  In his words, the challenge of urban sustainability in Nigerian cities lies in uniting men and materials in the best possible options and integrating imperceptibly the economy, society and the environment to attain the highest state of a safe, sound, functional and productive city.
